News Site for Techno Geeks!

My Techno Geek Website Alert goes out to All Voices and their us news and national news service. This is great, amazing and absolutely astounding! Everyone can report new now. We can now know what is going on absolutely everywhere and all the time. You just sign up for the site and then you too can report the news from your local arena. You can even report the news on the go via your cell phone text messages or via voice.

All Voices calls itself the first open media site where anyone can report from anywhere. So far there is limited world reporting because more people haven't signed up. But as the site grows, so will the amount of information and new stories from everywhere. I've just signed up and I urge other techno geek news hounds like myself to join in. You can make an impact on the world. That is generally Techno-Geeks secret fantasy.

I've been reading this site non stop now for a week. It's the best online news source I've found to date, so go check it out and let me know your impression of it.

New In-Wall Home Theater Speakers

Ok, my tech post for the day goes out with a nod to the in-wall home theater speakers I recently purchased from The Speaker Store for my home theater system. These are incredible! I was watching Independence Day (again) and could literally FEEL every explosion with these. Not only that the sound of something as simple as a pin dropping was crisp and clear. It's amazing the difference a good set of speakers can make in your movie watching experience. I also really got a kick out of listening to all the pops and sizzles of my favorite Food Network shows. It sounds like they are in the room cooking for me.

I'm a minimalist (ok, I just don't like dusting stuff!) and these speakers being mounted in the wall makes a great deal of difference in the way the room looks. Like the sound, the room now looks crisp and clean. Of course they have the traditional wall mount and bookshelf speakers too, all being great. I just really liked the in-wall version. A lot!

A Great Site For Information on Healthcare

Hey gang, not a techno post today but one that relates to a prior post. I posted a week or so ago about the Alzheimer Walk. Well I found another site that is really great for getting more information about alzheimers and in general for caring about your older parents and loved ones. It has a great layout and tons of information. It's called Springfield homecare and this site is really outstanding. It has information about everything from illness, choosing a home health care provider and even advice for talking to your elderly family members about various topics. That can be the most difficult, talking. It's hard to talk to someone you love about the fact they are getting older and what services or help that they may need without them feeling attacked or diminished as responsible adults. This site can certainly help with that. I strongly urge all of my Techno-Geek buddies with older family members to look into this site. A little information now can help a lot in the future.

Iris Pen - Text Scanner

The IRISPen Express is an intuitive text recognition handheld scanner.
This handheld scanner works just like a highlighter: simply slide it over printed information from newspapers, magazines, faxes, letters, etc. What you get is real and editable text, right at your cursor.

he IRISPen recognizes 128 different languages. All American and European languages are supported, including Central-European languages. Greek, Turkish, the Cyrillic ("Russian") and the Baltic languages and Hebrew are also supported. Optionally, the IRISPen reads Asian documents in Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Korean.

This is the greatest gadget I've bought for my computer in years. That says a lot right there! This is great for adding text from reports, files and books. I highly recommend it to anyone. Buy your here.

Great American Seafood Cookoff Recipes

Remember my earlier post about the Great American Seafood Cook Off and how they use local Seafood? Well the top 5 recipes are in and you can go vote for which one you like the best at the website, GreatAmericanSeafoodCookOff.com.
Personally, I like them ALL! I'm going to start with the one pictured, the Shrimp and Andouille Cassoulet. It looks wonderful. It's made from Louisiana Shrimp and Andouille sausage smothered in a white bean casserole. The recipe for this is on the website. The best part of all of these recipes is that not only do they use local seafood, which means it's fresher and costs less to both harvest and transport, but all of the other ingredients are local and easily found in your local grocery store. I hate recipes that have me hunting all over the planet for an ingredient. All of the recipes are like this and all are available for printing or downloading into an online cookbook.
All of these recipes also use domestic seafood. Lets fact it people, when it's domestic, we know a lot more about the area it's from and we know how much safer it is for us to eat. It's much cheaper as well because we save all that transportation cost. Most importantly, it TASTES so much better. The faster we can get it to the stove, the better it's going to be. It's an all around win-win situation to use domestic seafood.
Now I encourage everyone to go and vote for their favourite recipe. You could win a trip to New Orleans, home of the best seafood I have ever eaten! I visit there are least twice a year. Great people and incredible food. So go vote for your favourite recipe. Maybe we can dine together after the cook off!

Just when I thought I'd heard everything...

Along comes this: Drive Bay Toaster!
Having a sneaky way to keep fresh food around has always been an important goal for college students and geeks alike. Usually it’s done with mini fridges, mini microwaves and hot plates. Yet here’s another little gadget to throw on the list. This one is a toaster that is powered by your PC. It inserts directly into the drive bay and will fit a standard 5.25. It includes Windows based software interface which controls the temperature and how long the toast is in for.

Although this is a Windows version they are currently working on a Mac OS version that will hopefully be coming soon. To get this to work it requires an available USB port as well as a 4 pin Molex power connector. You will also need a free PCI slot. It does have a crumb tray like every other toaster and includes a 2 year warranty. It hopefully won’t cause your PC any overheating issues since it has a vent that exhausts the hot air out the back of the case. To pick one up it will cost you $29.99 from Crazy PC.

Really Great Site I Found

Ok....you are wondering if I have gone completely over the edge. I haven't. It's just that September is a week away. Which means that The Autumn holidays are right around the corner. The turkey is symbolic of the greatest shopping day of the year: Black Friday! This is of course the day after Thanksgiving.

Now you are wondering why I am starting so early to grouse about holiday shopping. I'm not. You see Black Friday is THE day to get high-end computer and electronic items at the lowest prices of the entire year (so you might want to start planning for these purchases now)!

The site I have found does nothing more or less than make available the ads from your favorite stores as soon as they become available. Some are already up! You can also sign up for email alerts so when a new store posts their ad, you know about it ASAP!

Lest you think I am kidding, and you all know how much I dislike real-life shopping, I saved a bundle (as in over $5000) last year by picking up a plasma tv, a new monitor and several other similar items on Black Friday. Advance ads like those on Black Friday Ads are why I was done so quickly. Most of the major retailers are already listed on this site as well as my people (Best Buy, Circuit City...etc). Even Bass Pro Shops has a listing (I HAPPEN to be a big fan of theirs).

If you start planning early, you can be ready to take advantage of the sales. The ads will help you plan which stores to go to and when (some stores have early bird specials....from about 6-8am!). Get your friends together and plan your trip.

I urge everyone to sign up and get their ads early. Plan your shopping trips and if you are in the market for big-ticket items, Black Friday is THE day to shop. Visit Black Friday Ads!

Cool Computer Mods

I'm not going to overload here with photos, but I could! I found a new blog to read (you will find a link under my blog list) called Dark Roasted Blend. One of the posts contains many great and really cool computer mods. Like the one pictured to the left.

That's one I have decided to make for my next computer. Considering that I can hang my monitor, it should look pretty cool. Of course there were several really great mods on the page, several of which I may try with my next computer building frenzy.

Here are a couple more photos. Just a couple of my more favoured mods, but be sure to check out the site for all of those that I am not going to put up a picture of!

Are you Normal or Nuts?

It's been a weird week. For those of you who don't know, my oldest is due to have her first child any time now (I've been on Baby Watch for a week) so I'm on pins and needles waiting for the phone to ring. I was looking through the Readers Digest website looking for their laughs page and came across an article asking the question "Are you Normal or Nuts?" Well I immediately figured I'd fall into the "nuts" category.....especially right now. While they didn't specifically address "Baby Watch", they DID address another quirk I happen to possess: I'm afraid to go to high places, like tall bridges or even the balcony at church. And it's not because I'm afraid I'll fall -- it's because I'm afraid I'll jump! I don't want to kill myself, but I do want to experience that sense of flying or floating. Of course, I know I'd go splat and die, so the desire to jump terrifies me. What do I do?

That's ME! I'm not afraid of falling but of jumping too! Oh, wait.....maybe I AM nuts????? No, the answer presented was this: Fear of heights is very common. And lots of people are, like you, more afraid of jumping than falling. For most fears, the treatment is systematic desensitization -- gradual exposure to what you fear.

So no, I'm not nuts (according to the article). That's a relief. All of the scenarios presented were interesting and a few of them sounded like friends of mine, so it is a great relief to know we are all normal. Nice to know that there are degrees of normalcy that allow us to fit into that category, even if we are a little on the off side. Read the article for yourself and see if any quirks you have (or those of a friend or loved one) falls into the normal or nuts category!

Invisibility Cloaks - Science is so COOL!

Long the stuff of fantasy, practical invisibility shields have been brought a step closer to reality by researchers who say they have engineered materials that can hide an object by bending ordinary light like balloon animals at a circus.

The researchers, led by Xiang Zhang of the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center at the University of California, Berkeley, have created two composite materials that possess negative refraction indexes, meaning they bend light opposite to the way most natural substances do. If water exhibited negative refraction, fish swimming in a pool would appear to be in the air above the water.

"This is an important step toward creating a cloak," Zhang said Monday.

But he insisted the work was not aimed at shielding Federation starships from Klingon battle cruisers. A more practical application, he said, would be to create a so-called "super lens" that could image infinitesimally small objects, enabling the manufacture of still tinier computer chips.

Materials scientists previously have found two-dimensional materials that cause negative refraction, making an object seem to disappear. But the light-bending properties of these materials were unreliable, the science team said.

The Berkeley researchers, whose work appears this week in the journals Science and Nature, created two different, three-dimensional materials that exhibit negative refraction.

The first method involved stacking alternating layers of silver and magnesium fluoride, a transparent compound used in lenses and windows. Then, tiny fishnet patterns — with holes 860 nanometers apart, or less than one-hundredth the diameter of a human hair — were cut into the layers.

Jason Valentine, a UC Berkeley graduate student, said the layers of fishnet work together to bend the light in an unnatural direction. With further development, the material might eventually be able to bend light entirely around an object, channeling it like water flowing around a rock. With no light reflected back at a viewer, the object would not be visible.

The silver-magnesium fluoride material worked only on light frequencies in the infrared range, beyond the visible spectrum. But with a second technique, researchers succeeded in bending light in the red portion of the visible light spectrum.

The technique involved placing small silver nano-wires inside porous aluminum oxide to accomplish a similar light-channeling ability.

Among the advantages of these new materials is that less light is lost than with the previous two-dimensional materials.

Jie Yao, a graduate student in applied science and technology, said several obstacles remained before the materials could be put into mass production. The material is expensive to produce, and researchers need to demonstrate negative refraction at all wavelengths of visible light, not just red.

They also must overcome the problem of directionality. At the present time, an object coated in the material could appear invisible in one direction but fully visible in another.

Surmounting these barriers will take years, Yao said.

Blaze Media Pro Multimedia Software

It's been a slow week here. I've been busy working building some websites as well as working on some security issues with a few companies that came to me for help.

Mostly I've been working with a new program, Blaze Media Pro. This is amazing. Need to convert a movie or sound file from one form to another? This is the software for you. It works as a converter, editor.....this does it all. It's a powerful all-in-one converter for CD, MP3, WAV, WMA, OGG, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, AVI, WMV, MOV, Flash (SWF and FLV), iPod, PSP, 3GP, etc.; editor; recorder; CD/DVD ripper; audio, data CD/DVD burner for DVD, VCD, and SVCD; and more.

I've actually been having fun just playing with it now for days. The various editing effects are really cool. If you do any sort of conversion or editing of your multimedia files, try this software out. I'm sure you will love it as much as I do!

106 MPG AIR-CAR to be a Reality!!!!!

This is as High-Tech as it gets people!
You've heard of hybrids, electric cars and vehicles that can run on vegetable oil. But of all the contenders in the quest to produce the ultimate fuel-efficient car, this could be the first one to let you say, "fill it up with air."

That's the idea behind the compressed air car, which backers say could achieve a fuel economy of 106 miles per gallon.

Plenty of skepticism exists, but with many Americans trying to escape sticker shock at the gas pump, the concept is generating buzz.

The technology has been the focus of MDI, a European company founded in 1991 by a French inventor and former race car engineer.

New York-based Zero Pollution Motors is the first firm to obtain a license from MDI to produce the cars in the United States, pledging to deliver the first models in 2010 at a price tag of less than $18,000.

The concept is similar to how a locomotive works, except compressed air -- not steam -- moves the engine's pistons, said Shiva Vencat, vice president of MDI and CEO of Zero Pollution Motors.

Gas still plays a role

The six-seater planned for the U.S. market would be able to reach speeds of more than 90 mph and have a range of more than 800 miles thanks to a dual energy engine, Vencat said.

The design calls for one or more tanks of compressed air under the car's floor, as well as a tank holding at least 8 gallons of fuel.

Whether the engine uses just air or both air and fuel would depend on how fast the car is going. It would run purely on compressed air at speeds less than 35 mph, Vencat said.

Since the car could only go a short distance when using just air, fuel is needed to get the full range, he explained.

"Above 35 mph, there is an external combustion system, which is basically a heater that uses a little bit of gasoline or biofuel or ethanol or vegetable oil that will heat the air," Vencat said.

"Heating the air increases its volume, and by increasing its volume, it increases [the car's] range. That's why with one gallon of gasoline or its equivalent we are able to make over 100 mpg."

Vencat said an on-board compressor would refill the air tank while the car is running, or owners could refill it by plugging it into a power outlet for four hours.

Is it for real?

Experts aren't sure Americans will be zipping around in air cars and getting 106 mpg, or more than twice the fuel economy of hybrid-electric vehicles such as the Toyota Prius.

It is possible to power a car with compressed air, but the mileage claim is "at the edge of possibility," said John Callister, director of the Harvey Kinzelberg Entrepreneurship in Engineering program at Cornell University's College of Engineering.

He noted that such dramatic fuel efficiency is associated with tiny experimental cars, not bigger mainstream ones.

"No one's really proven a six-seater passenger car [can get] any better than 75 miles to the gallon. So this would represent a big step forward," Callister said.

"They would have to prove that before they can throw rocks at the Prius."

Another expert expressed concern about the amount of energy it would take to generate the required air pressure: 4,500 pounds per square inch, or more than 120 times the pressure inside the tires of a typical four-door sedan.

"That is above what you normally find even in an industrial setting," said William Bulpitt, senior research engineer at the Georgia Institute of Technology's Strategic Energy Institute.

"That takes quite a compressor to do. ... It takes horsepower to compress the air up to that pressure."

If you count that energy, it's hard to believe the car would be that much more efficient than an electric vehicle, Callister said.

India shows interest

The compressed air car will get a chance to prove itself next year when it competes for the Automotive X Prize. The multimillion-dollar award will go to the team that "can win a stage race for clean, production-capable vehicles that exceed 100 mpg equivalent fuel economy," according to the X Prize Foundation.

The air-car concept has also drawn the interest of Tata Motors, India's largest automaker. The company announced an agreement with MDI last year to further develop and refine the technology.

However, the cars have yet to hit the streets in India or anywhere else.

"The project is under progress. We do not yet have any timeframe for launch," said Debasis Ray, the head of corporate communications for Tata Motors.

Only prototypes exist at this point, Vencat said.

Light design

The body of the car planned for the United States would be built with fiberglass and injected foam. The chassis, composed of aluminum rods, would be glued together, not welded.

The design allows the car to be as light as possible, Vencat said.

For anyone who has doubts about its safety, he insisted computer simulations show that the vehicle would pass crash tests and meet all U.S. safety standards.

"Do you think somebody would actually put millions of dollars into making a car that will not pass safety regulations? There's no point in doing that," Vencat said.

Callister pointed out that there haven't been any lightweight, 100-plus mpg cars to pass crash tests but said it could be done through a "very clever design" of a lightweight frame.

A good prototype could dispel many of the doubts about the compressed air car, he added.

"I don't think we should discount this advance if it happens," Callister said.

JourneyLite - Weight Loss Surgery

No, that's not a UFO...it's my digital scale. I was talking to a friend recently who had weight loss surgery and how it had changed her life. What could really be more high-tech that that? She asked me to recommend a good digital scale. I recommended the one I own.

She went to the JourneyLite center down in Tampa for her lap band surgery and said that she was really surprised at how nice and easy they made everything. She was treated like a friend instead of as just another patient. She said that the doctors and nurses really seemed to care about her as a person and not just a body.

Her specific procedure was the Lap-band system and she is absolutely thrilled with the results. If you are looking into weight loss surgery, I strongly encourage you to look into the Journeylite centers. My friend didn't just lose weight, she became healthy. That's what is important in the long run.

Smartparts SP15MW 15" Digital Picture Frame - Walnut, Remote Control, PC Free

These frames are the greatest invention since the digital camera! I love this one....not only does it look great but I can use a remote to filter through the photo shows I want to display, I can update it quickly and easily and I don't even need to do any of this through a computer. It's perfect.

I have one of these for family photos, one for Techno Art and another for photos of friends. It cuts down on clutter. For me that's important. I dislike clutter. I still have a great deal....but I dislike it. This makes it easier to keep photos organized and on display. I'm about to be a first time Great-Aunt-Grandma......so I will be getting another one of these just for baby Jack.
Check them out and buy yours today at Tiger Direct.

Payday Loans: It Doesn't Rain, It Floods!

A couple of hours ago I wrote my first blog post ever in praise of Payday loans. Now I'm going to write my second. I just got finished talking to a friend who read the first post. He mentioned another online source for Payday Loans This group also offers conventional loans for mortgages and cars. He found these people to be very friendly, efficient and very reasonable. His credit was trashed during a messy divorce, so he needed special help. They are also available online. In fact, virtually the entire process can be handled online. The interest rates are good as well. I said earlier that a great deal had changed in the past few years. It has. Thanks to people like the good folks at Complete Loan Source. Because of companies like these, people are being treated right when they need emergency financing. For that we can all be thankful. Check them out here:

Even Techno-Geeks need to Decorate!

I love digital art. One of the reasons my walls were bare for so long was I couldn't decide WHICH artwork to display (I have some commitment issues I think!). Digitalart.org didn't help. They have thousands of outstanding pieces of artwork, including the one pictured. Between them and Allposters.com, it's amazing I ever settled on anything. But I did. Sort of. I simply rotate the art. Those not in current rotation are stored under the beds.

Anyway, enough about my compulsive behavior. Go check out Digital Art and All Posters for yourself. Good luck!

Games!

Hey, even Techno-Geeks new to take a break now and then. I love games and puzzles of all kinds. I found Reflexive several years ago and I love them. It was an accident that I found them, I saw a blog post about a new "pong" type game. It looked cool, had great graphics and good music. I loved it so much that after the first free hour I actually bought the game. That's how all of the games on Reflexive work: You play them for an hour and if you like them you pay for the unlock code. Much better system than buying an unknown game and possibly hating it and being out the money. So if you get a chance or are just looking to have some fun, check out Reflexive!

Payday Loans Can be a Good Thing!

I never thought I'd write anything positive about Payday Loans, but here I go. I have a friend who had some problems with not getting child support from her ex, and a loan payment being late as a result AND auto repairs. She needed money fast and couldn't wait on her ex to decide if he was going to get a new tattoo or pay the child support ( I am NOT kidding!). So she got herself a payday loan.
I was actually surprised that the interest rate was pretty good, it was fast and painless. She was able to get it online and the company works nationwide.
Things have changed a lot in not only the economy but in how payday loans are handled. I would never recommend that anyone rely on them, mostly because I think we should all try to put enough money aside for emergency purposes. But if you DO need money fast, these people are nice to work with and they are fair. So if you need money, see the people here at Payday Loans .
Oh, in case you are wondering, he got the tattoo...bugs bunny....go figure.
